A piston needs an airtight circular seal ( o-ring) fitted into the cylinder. This piston has a handle for a firm grip to be applied to it. and is a large enough surface area to strike it sharply without causing pain. While the cylinder is braced against a hard surface it can be withdrawn from the cylinder. The piston has a notch or recess on its face. into which a piece of char cloth is placed. The compression of air when the piston is quickly rammed into the cylinder causes the interior temperature to rise to 500°F. This is hot enough for the char cloth to ignite with a flash. The piston is then quickly withdrawn before the now-burning tinder burns the oxygen inside the cylinder. The ember and char cloth is then removed from the piston and transferred to a larger nest of fine kindling material.
